In it are represented, with one poem each, the chancellors, fellows, and award winners of the Academy of American Poets since 1934. The result is a unique sampler of the various literary styles and themes that have left their marks on the past five decades. Fifty Years of American Poetry gives readers the opportunity to hear familiar voices and new ones--and encounter the great American poems that have captured both our minds and our hearts. The Academy of American Poets has as its stated purpose ''To encourage, stimulate, and foster the production of American poetry..." This was never limited to poets of any particular school, method, or category of poetry so this anthology is as representative a cross-section of American poetry in the last 50 years as any of its kind. The Academy is not a stodgy eastem provincial institution. It encourages young poets, recognizes the importance of change and growth in the poetry of America, and believes that poetry is not for poets only. This anthology was compiled on this basis. Re-Forming American Social Welfare by Andrew W. Dobelstein,
American welfare policies and programs frustrate both conservative and liberal advocates who fail to realize that American welfare policy cannot be any more than, or any less than, the distinctly American framework in which it operates. Re-forming American Social Welfare departs from standard presentations of social welfare by dealing directly with the ideologies that have shaped the American experience and illustrates how the values these ideologies generate define the framework of American social welfare through existing economic, governmental, and social structures. By reviewing the ideological frameworks that have shaped the American experience, Andrew Dobelstein explains that we have tried to do much more with American social welfare policy than is possible in the present American system and that prudence suggests a reformation of American social welfare policy -- which is not to do less but to do what we are capable of doing in a more effective way. This book suggests how welfare can be reformed by taking the American ideological context as a road map for which welfare changes are possible and which are not, laying out a framework for welfare as America enters the twenty-first century.

Martin Dudziak - Martin Dudziak is an American-born (1952) scientist (quantum physics, biophysics, mathematics) who has developed seminal work in areas of complex systems, quantum networks, and emergent critical processes (ECP). He grew up in Buffalo, New York, studied at Canisius High School and Colgate University, received his PhD in physics in 1993, and has worked for a number of corporations and universities including Intel, ST Microelectronics, Battelle, Medical College of Virginia, VCU, and Silicon Dominion.

Robert Rosen - Robert Rosen (June 27, 1934, Brooklyn, New York - December 28, 1998, Rochester, New York) was an American theoretical biologist and, later in life, a Professor of Biophysics at Dalhousie University until he retired. His main interest was developing a specific definition of complexity and an ensuing theoretical framework, now called "Rosennean Complexity".
