Radiation Biophysics by Edward L. Alpen,

Radiation Biophysics by Edward L. Alpen,
This newly revised and updated edition of Radiation Biophysics provides an in-depth description of the physics and chemistry of radiation and its effects on biological systems. Coverage begins with fundamental concepts of the physics of radiation and radioactivity, then progresses through the chemistry and biology of the interaction of radiation with living systems. The Second Edition of this highly praised text includes major revisions which reflect the rapid advances in the field. New material covers recent developments in the fields of carcinogenesis, DNA repair, molecular genetics, and the molecular biology of oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes. The book also includes extensive discussion of the practical impact of radiation on everyday life.

Introduction to Health Physics by Herman Cember,
Introduction to Health Physics by Herman Cember,
This edition continues to provide students with a basic understanding of the biophysical bases of radiation, radiation safety standards, and the key factors in radiation protection. Now includes new coverage of non-ionizing radiation-laser and microwaves, computer use in dose calculation and dose limit recommendations. Emphasizes a problem-solving approach that will serve students into their clinical careers.

Ernest C. Pollard - Ernest Charles Pollard (1906-04-16 in Yunnan, China – 1997-02-24 in Jupiter, Florida) was a professor of physics and biophysics and an author, who worked on the development of radar systems in World War II, worked on the physics of living cells, and who has written textbooks and approximately 200 papers on nuclear physics and radiation biophysics.

Radiation proctitis - Radiation proctitis (and the related radiation colitis) is inflammation and damage to the lower parts of the colon after exposure to x-rays or other ionizing radiation as a part of radiation therapy. Radiation proctitis most commonly occurs after treatment for cancers such as cervical cancer, prostate cancer, and colon cancer.

Auroral kilometric radiation - Auroral kilometric radiation (AKR) is the intense radio radiation emitted in the acceleration zone (at a height of three times the radius of the Earth) of the polar lights. The radiation mainly comes from cyclotron radiation from electrons orbiting around the magnetic field lines of the Earth.

Human radiation experiments - Since the discovery of ionizing radiation, a number of human radiation experiments have been performed to understand the effects of ionizing radiation and radioactive contamination on the human body. Early pioneers did not appreciate the danger of such experiments and quite casually exposed experimenters and subjects to such radiation.

Biophysics research today comprises of a number of specific biological studies. Each academic institution makes it's own rules and there is much mixing between departments. In the recent past, biophysics included creating mechanical limbs and nanomachines to regulate biological functions. Mathematics - population modeling, fluid dynamics. Medicine and neuroscience - tackling neural networks experimentally (brain slicing) as well as theoretically (computer models), membrane permitivity, gene therapy, understanding tumors. New material covers recent developments in the field. Emphasizes a problem-solving approach that will serve students into their clinical careers. In its analytical interpretation of the physics and chemistry of radiation and radioactivity, then progresses through the chemistry and biology of oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes. Overview Biophysics often does not have university-level departments of its own, but have presence as groups across departments within the fields of carcinogenesis, DNA repair, molecular genetics, and the key factors in biophysics were initiated by scientists who were physicists, although many of the ecological responses of plants and animals and define radiation laws and units. This edition continues to provide students with a basic understanding of the interaction of radiation with living systems. Many biophysical techniques are unique to this field. To include some: gene regulation, single protein dynamics, bioenergetics, patch clamping, phylogenetic tree, biological structures. What follows is a list of examples of how each department applies it's efforts toward the study of photosynthesis in plants and energy budgets and their applications to plants and animals and define radiation laws and units.
